Living Room May Be Final PC Battlefield

Cnet News
December 2, 2005

Now that Thanksgiving leftovers are just about gone, and Christmas songs are blasting over the grocery store sound system, it can only mean one thing: It's time for the pre-Macworld rumor mill to kick into high gear. ThinkSecret reported earlier this week that a new Mac Mini will likely be introduced at the January Macworld Expo. The new version of the diminutive PC is said to be poised to play a pivotal role in home entertainment systems, coming loaded with Apple's Front Row software, DVR capabilities and an iPod dock.

Though still unconfirmed, the news comes as music to many Mac fans' ears. Unlike past Apple products (Yes, we're looking at you, iPod Nano), the news doesn't come as much of a shock. After all, the original Mac Mini was widely touted as the computer that would take the nation's living rooms by storm. Although the first Mac Mini didn't exactly fly off retailers' shelves, a more media-centric version may show more inspired sales. Once the denizen of "unscrupulous" file traders, digital media has been legitimized in recent years by many sites and services, and consumers have begun to feel more comfortable using electronic audio and video as their primary source of home entertainment. With Microsoft's media-friendly Xbox 360 gunning for the same space, analysts are beginning to wonder if digital entertainment will prove to be the battle that wins the war.
