Building a High-Traffic Web Site (or Blog)

By Patrick Huey

Most people who create websites or blogs do so because they love what they do or have a need to express themselves. However, many have discovered that creating useful websites or blogging can be a lucrative business.

Nevertheless, when it comes to creating a website or blog, most webmasters are saddled with the same problem: how do I get traffic to my website or blog?

There are many so-called experts out there who claim that they can get traffic to your website, often at a price, but how many of them really know what they are talking about?

I can't really say which expert has the best advice, but I can say that when it comes to building website traffic, you should pay attention to someone who has experience doing this.

Steve Pavlina has written a plan on increasing traffic to your website and/or your blog, based on his own experience. He started writing his personal devlopment blog, Steve Pavlina.com, in October, 2004, and built up enough visitors to the point where he now has over 700,000 visitors a month. In his post, "How to Build a High-Traffic Web Site (or Blog)", he lays out the steps every webmaster should take to get visitors to their site, but it's not necessarily the same as what some of the experts recommend.

Steve Pavlina basically says that each webmaster needs to do the following:

1. Create valuable content.
2. Create original content.
3. Create timeless content.
4. Write for human beings first, computers second.
5. Know why you want a high-traffic site.
6. Let your audience see the real you.
7. Write what is true for you, and learn to live with the consequences.
8. Treat your visitors like real human beings.
9. Keep money in its proper place.
10. If you forget the first nine suggestions, just focus on genuinely helping people, and the rest will take care of itself.

As for what Steve Pavlina means by creating valubale content, he indicates that he writes information that is intended to last for generations and even beyond his lifetime. He states that he doesn't focus on the latest trends because anything that is the hottest rage today may be easily forgotten tomorrow. He would rather blog about Aristotle than Paris Hilton.

He also differs from the web "experts" in that he does not worry about search engine marketing or tactics. While he understands the need for marketing one's website and getting quality traffic to it, he feels that having good, useful content in itself should be able to attract visitors to your site or blog. As for money, while he believes that you can and should make money from your site or blog, it's more important to give information that will solve people's problems, and when you do that, the money will take care of itself.
